How we design a fidget clicker from scratch
A good fidget clicker needs three things: a button that springs back, a click you can feel, and a size that fits in a pocket. Getting all three right takes testing, and testing is the fun part.
1. Sketch it on paper
We start with a pencil drawing of the outside shape and where the buttons go. Measuring a real pocket helps decide the size, about 2.5 inches long.
2. Build the model
In Tinkercad, the body is a rounded box with two holes on top. The buttons are separate pieces with a thin, bendy arm underneath that acts like a spring.
3. Test the click
The spring arm is the tricky part. Too thick and the button is hard to press. Too thin and it snaps. We printed six versions, each a tiny bit different, before the click felt right.
4. Print in place
The final design prints all in one go, with small gaps between the moving parts so nothing sticks together. No glue needed.
What we learned
- Failed prints are not failures. Each one taught us a measurement.
- Small changes, like half a millimeter, make a big difference.
- Write down what you change so you can go back if a new version is worse.
